INTERMEDIATE TRAINING IN SUBTLE TOUCH
Duration: 2 days · Format: 70% hands-on · 30% theory
This 2-day training offers an immersive, hands-on experience in learning, applying, and receiving a range of Subtle Touch techniques. Participants will be introduced to Fractional Decompression, Calatonia of the Sight, an extended Calatonia sequence, specific head/face touch sequences, and a variety of “add-on” movements and touches designed to be integrated prior to the basic Calatonia sequence. The guided “Breathing Through the Joints” technique will also be taught and practiced.
The theoretical component will explore the affective-touch system (C tactile – system and the discriminative system), central sensitization, and the psychological and somatic dimensions of pain. Participants are invited to bring clinical material related to their use of Calatonia and to begin conceptualizing cases within their own theoretical orientation.
Approximately 70% of the training is dedicated to supervised hands-on practice, with the remaining 30% focused on theory, sharing and discussion.
By the end of the Intermediate Training in Subtle Touch, participants can expect to:
- Confidently apply intermediate Subtle Touch techniques
Learn to use Fractional Decompression, Calatonia of the Sight, extended Calatonia, and head/face touch sequences in a coherent, clinically informed way. - Integrate “add-on” movements and touches into basic Calatonia
Skillfully combine preparatory touch and movement sequences with the basic Calatonia protocol to deepen regulation and therapeutic effect. - Use “Breathing Through the Joints” as a clinical resource
Apply this guided technique to support self-regulation, embodiment, and pain modulation in sessions. - Understand the affective-touch and discriminative touch systems
Gain a clearer grasp of the C-tactile (CT) system, the discriminative touch system, and how both relate to central sensitization, pain, and attachment. - Work more effectively with pain and somatic distress
Use subtle touch strategies to address both psychological and somatic aspects of pain in a trauma-sensitive manner. - Refine case conceptualization using Calatonia
Begin to frame and discuss cases within your own theoretical orientation while integrating Calatonia and Subtle Touch interventions. - Increase confidence and precision in hands-on work
Leave with greater ease, clarity, and clinical confidence in bringing intermediate-level Subtle Touch into your ongoing practice.
Prerequisite: Completion of Calatonia Basic Training I is required before attending this module.
Important:
This introductory training does not authorize participants to teach Calatonia.
For pathways to teaching, please request by email: Requirements for Becoming a Calatonia Facilitator and Trainer.
Note to Participants
Training in Calatonia & Subtle Touch supports both professional development and personal process, which can be particularly valuable for clinicians working with stress, trauma, and regulation.
Participants frequently report:
- Increased confidence in using gentle, non-invasive touch within a therapeutic frame
- A deepened sense of mutual trust, attunement, and safety in clinical relationships
- Greater appreciation for slow, subtle interventions as a complement to verbally oriented methods
- Enhanced awareness of their own embodied presence as a therapeutic tool
Group learning tends to have highly positive outcomes. Group dynamics can:
- Strengthen each participant’s capacity for self-regulation and co-regulation
- Deepen somatic and psychological processing
- Offer a supportive environment for exploring clinical questions and ethical boundaries around touch
Because the training may activate personal material and deepen self-awareness, it is strongly recommended that participants be engaged in their own psychotherapy, either before and/or during the training.
All participants receive a Training Brochure with:
- Protocol summaries and key guidelines
- Theoretical highlights and references
- Recommendations for further study, supervision, and integration into practice
* We encourage participants to attend the workshop with a local colleague to exchange regular applications of the technique for further professional development and in-depth personal experience.
